In 26 matches this year, Gill has amassed 1449 runs from four
centuries, including a double century. He has had an outstanding year in ODI
cricket. Compared to his career average of 61.02, he has an astounding 63.00
average for the year. After being removed from the World Cup at the beginning
due to dengue, he had a poor start. However, he has since amassed 219 runs in
six innings, including fifty against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
World Cup 2023: India's campaign is strengthened by Gill's
top ranking
With four half-centuries in eight innings, Babar hasn't had a
bad World Cup himself, but he needed to do more to hang onto the position he'd
held for more than two years because of the narrow margin between him and the
rising Gill.
After Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli, Gill is now
the fourth player from India to hold the top spot in the ICC rankings for ODI
batting.
On Tuesday night in Mumbai, however, Glenn Maxwell delivered
the best individual batting display of the World Cup thus far, putting on an
incredible display to lead Australia over Afghanistan and into the semi-finals
of the tournament. He rose two spots to sixth place with his perfect
double-century, while Ibrahim Zadran, the other centurion in the game, moved up
six spaces to 12th place after a strong World Cup performance. Another batter
who has contributed significantly to his team's success, Fakhar Zaman, is
currently ranked No. 11, three positions outside of the top ten for batters.
Overall, the rankings show how dominant India has been at the
World Cup thus far, winning eight of the eight league-stage matches they have
played in, all by substantial margins. Their most productive batsmen to date
have been Rohit Sharma (No. 5) and Kohli (No. 2, behind de Kock), but their
bowling has been absolutely spectacular. While Shami (16 wickets in four
games), Bumrah (15 in eight), Ravindra Jadeja (14 in eight), Kuldeep (12 in
eight), and Siraj (ten in eight) have all performed as a pack, none of them are
in the top three in terms of wicket-takers. In their last three games, India
have bowled out South Africa for 83, Sri Lanka for 55, and England for 129.
Siraj has risen from third to first place after going 3 for 16
and 1 for 11 against South Africa and Sri Lanka, respectively, earlier in the
week. Afridi, who was ranked first the week before, is now ranked fifth, while
spinners Keshav Maharaj and Adam Zampa—who is presently tied for second place
in the World Cup in terms of wicket-taking—move up to ranks two and three.

For the Indians, Shami has moved up seven spots to tenth,
Bumrah has moved up three spaces to eighth, and Kuldeep has moved up three
spots to fourth.
Dilshan Madushanka has climbed 31 places to No. 45 among the
other best wicket-takers at the World Cup thus far, while Marco Jansen has
climbed nine spots to share 24th place.
